by Mr Malebranche and Marquis Magett

So often we encounter students who live through terrible moments. Family and friends are often the one who pay the price for generational poverty and gun violence in urban neighborhoods. Marquis sat with me and told me a story sharing an article about a shooting.

**So what happened?**

According to the Chicago Sun Times at about 9:20 p.m., the 12-year-old boy was standing on a sidewalk with a group of people when a male took out a handgun and fired shots in the 3300 block of West Madison, according to Chicago Police. The boy was shot multiple times in the abdomen and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition.

A 23-year-old man was also wounded in the shooting, police said. He was shot in the arm and showed up at Stroger Hospital, where his condition stabilized.

**How did it change your block or friends?**

It changed what was happening on the block at the moment. Its like we had these buildings. We had buildings as our gold mine. Now we have security guards that stopped us from accessing our market. Now we are outside and it’s more dangerous there. My friends changed too because they don’t want to do what we do because of the risk. But someone has to lead them.

**How do you grow them this experience?**

“I don’t really know how to answer this question. He has, because he doesn’t come around anymore, but I haven’t yet. Maybe someday.” -Marquis
